Past . Present . Future         Translation: Past . Present . Future

This is a unique event that is of the highest quality. The diversity and richness of its contents pulls me back to Admont every two years.”
Bruce Edwards – Chairman of JAMS, USA

An event not to be missed! By far the broadest and deepest training that challenges me profoundly every time I attend ISBM in Admont.”
Jeremy Lack, Switzerland.

The International Summer School on Business Mediation (ISBM) is a one week course dedicated to business executives, lawyers and professional mediators seeking to broaden their skills in conflict prevention or resolution.

It is supported by the Austrian Ministry of Justice, the JAMS Foundation, and the International Committee of the American Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section.

A small group of attendees (max. 100 participants) from four different continents (in the past, including from Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA) will spend five days together, learning from one-another and discovering new practices and approaches to dispute prevention and resolution, all of which are compatible with commercial conflicts, whether within a company or between companies, of all shapes and sizes.

This unique event brings together leading mediators, trainers and participants from around the world having a broad range of professional skills, reflecting varied and diverse approaches to conflict prevention and resolution, including lawyers, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, neuroscientists, philosophers, anthropologists, mediators, judges, artists, etc. This blend of professional cultures, views and experiences provides new insights to the world of business mediation, and how to achieve better processes and outcomes.

ISBM takes place every two years in Admont, Austria, a small town nestled in a national park, up in the Austrian Alps. Attendance is limited to 100 participants to allow optimal interaction, and at least 50% of the attendees are repeat participants. For comments from previous participants, please see the testimonials.

The theme of this year’s ISBM event will be Past . Present . Future. Time is a topic that is always present in business, in alternative dispute resolution processes, and in the evolution of conflict dynamics. It needs to be understood consciously and can be used wisely to help shape outcomes. During our week in Admont this year, we will look at the notion of time from all angles, including rhythms, how they are experienced, perceived, felt, understood and used, including deceleration, acceleration, time pressures, deadlines, quality of time, loss of time, future orientation, committing to the present and dealing with the past – all of this in view of business dispute prevention and resolution. We will also be dealing with the cultural dimensions of time, and their influence on dealing with conflicts and conflict resolution across national and cultural borders. Internationally recognized speakers from three different continents will shed light on these topics in workshops and lectures from various disciplines, institutions, and schools of thought such as law, hypnotherapy, neurobiology, systemic therapy, arbitration, litigation advocacy, economics, dance, philosophy, music, Buddhism and many more. We will also analyse:
  • How has the process of mediation evolved over recent decades and where is it headed?
  • How has or may mediation change as a result of technological advancements?
  • What future trends are emerging in business mediation and in various countries?
  • To what new areas of conflict can business mediation lend itself: financial sector mediation, trans-generational mediation, investor-state mediation, etc?
  • What is the future of business mediation as perceived by users, advisors and providers?
  • How can we take into account the theme of Past --Present -- Future at a personal level as well?
  • How much of our own history and source profession as a mediator is reflected in the design of a mediation process?
Under the title of Life-Rhythm there will be five days where time and time rhythms can be experienced in special forms at various intervals. Experiments, constellation work, meditation, body work in different forms, outdoor activities will also be part of the programme as methods of tried and tested learning.
